Workers in Third Wade Strike

Originally published on This is the Sentinel

Workers at a Stoke-on-Trent pottery firm today staged their third one-day strike.
More than 700 staff at Burslem-based Wades Ceramics took the action in protest against proposed changes in working practice that they claim could lead to some of them losing more than £90-a-week.

The strike was called by the Ceramic and Allied Trades Union, who claim that members would lose shift allowance, sickness and severance pay.

The union also says that the changes would remove guarantees of long-term employment and affect pay.

The series of strikes are the first to hit the industry for five years.

CATU general secretary Geoff Bagnall, said he hoped that further industrial action would not be necessary.

He said: ''Negotiations are at a very delicate stage and we thought they would be successful, but the workers are out again.

''There are things like compensation for lost earnings to be taken into account but we earnestly tried to reach an agreement before this strike.''

No-one at Wades was available for comment.
